College hoops: Western Michigan starts fast, wins; CMU, EMU lose in MAC – Detroit Free Press



Western Michigan 73, Ball State 58

KALAMAZOO – Bryce Moore opened the game with a 3-pointer and Josh Davis hit two more as Western Michigan opened on a 13-3 run and never eased up in a 73-58 Mid-America Conference West Division battle with Ball State on Saturday afternoon.

Bouncing back after having a four-game win streak snapped Tuesday at Toledo, the Broncos pushed their home win streak to eight straight regular season MAC wins.

Thomas Wilder finished with 14 points for the Broncos (11-6, 3-1 MAC). Moore added 12 and Davis 11 while Western Michigan shot 23 of 60 from the field, including 9 of 18 from 3-point range, and 18 of 26 from the line.

Ball State (11-6, 2-2) got 13 points from Tayler Persons and another 11 from Ishmael El-Amin. The Cardinals were 22 of 53 from the field (41.5 percent), including 8 of 28 from deep, but just 6 of 10 from the line.

Toledo 93, Central Michigan 82

MT. PLEASANT – Tre’Shaun Fletcher scored 22 points, Jaelan Sanford added 21 as Toledo jumped out to a 10-point lead and never trailed, defeating Central Michigan, 93-82, Saturday, winning for the sixth time in seven games.

Nate Navigato opened the game with a 3-pointer and the Rockets never looked back. Navigato scored 18 points on 5 of 8 shooting — all from distance. Fletcher and Sanford each had three 3s as Toledo (11-6, 3-1 MAC) finished 14 of 32 from 3-point range. Willie Jackson added 11 points and seven rebounds.

The win keeps the Rockets tied with Western Michigan atop the MAC West Division standings. Toledo defeated Western Michigan on Tuesday and the teams meet again Jan. 27.

Shawn Roundtree poured in a season-high 29 points for Central Michigan (12-5, 1-3), while Kevin McKay and Cecil Williams added 14 apiece. The Chippewas have lost their last three.

Northern Illinois 72, Eastern Michigan 66

DEKALB, Ill. – Eugene German scored 26 points and Northern Illinois snapped a two-game skid, beating Eastern Michigan, 72-66, on Saturday.

Levi Bradley added 14 points and six rebounds, Justin Thomas had 11 points and Lacey James had nine points and eight rebounds.

Northern Illinois was down 33-27 at intermission but German opened the second half with a 3-pointer, sparking a 24-9 surge that took the Huskies (9-8, 2-2 MAC) to a 51-42 lead with 10:38 to play. He followed that with a 3-point play and two more from distance to make it 60-52 with 5:44 remaining.

Eastern Michigan’s Elijah Minnie sank a layup to cut it to 66-63 with just under a minute left but Bradley drained a 3 and James followed with a 3-point play in the final 34 seconds to seal the win.

Paul Jackson had 19 points for the Eagles (10-7, 1-3) who have lost three of the last four. James Thompson IV added 15 points and led the team with 12 rebounds.
