MICROSOFT is working on a new Xbox joypad designed for hardcore gamers.
The news came to light thanks to a series of images depicting a never-before-seen Xbox Elite controller turned up online.
The first round of images were posted to China’s hugely popular Baidu social network.
According to the poster, the new version is expected to feature a USB Type C port for charging – just like the new MacBook Pro.
The controller was also tipped to feature Bluetooth support for Windows 10 PCs and three-level hair-trigger locks.
Excitingly, the joysticks also appear to have an adjustable tension mechanism that would let you control how loose or stiff they feel.
The adjustable design isn’t a huge surprise, mind. Microsoft filed a patent for that exact technology back in December.
Following the Baidu leak, an image was posted to Reddit depicting the entire controller.
The joypad seems to have redesigned palm-holds that look far grippier than current Xbox controller designs.
This is probably in response to Xbox users who have complained about the wearing-down of existing Elite controllers.
Tech site The Verge says a source “familiar with Microsoft’s Xbox plans” has confirmed that the Reddit image is genuine.

However, there’s no word on when this controller will be released, or how much it will cost.
The current Xbox Elite controller costs £119.99, so we’d be surprised if a new model was any cheaper.
As far as a release date goes, the most likely opportunities would be the Games Developer Conference in March or E3 in June.
